Corn Poppies --Papaver rhoeas,
These volunteer all over my lot. In early spring I transplant some of the poppies to places I want them, but the most magnificent ones are those that are allowed to grow where they want to grow.

Most of my corn poppies range from dark red to orange-red, but every once and a while I get a pink one.

Papaver somniferum var. paeoniflorum
These are not well adapted to the heat we get here in coastal North Carolina, but I grow a few just to see their very impressive flowers before the heat knocks them back.


Iceland Poppies -- Don't do well here. In the background chives are blooming.
