A Directory of Music Collections in the Southeast United States
Compiled by:
Southeast Chapter Music Library Association
July 4, 1994
(Updated September 2003, April 2007)

FOREWORD

This directory contains new information on a wide range of musical backgrounds and traditions, providing details on the individual collections and what can be found where. Listed here are one hundred sixteen music collections in nine states:

In 1993 a survey form was used to gather information, with an update of information and a few last hour additions made in early 1994. The form, identical to that used by other MLA chapters in order to maintain approximate uniformity of contents in MLA chapter directories, was mailed to libraries that seemed potentially qualified for the directory, that is, libraries with large music collections and/or materials of special musical interest. Responses to the survey were entered into a database comprised of separate entries for each collection.

The directory is organized by state, subdivided alphabetically by the name of the institution or collection name. Entries are numbered, using the zip code letters of the state followed by the directory entry number. The entries' alpha numbers are referenced in the three indices. The entry layout accommodates a broad scope of libraries. As much as possible, prose statements in entries appear as written on the returned surveys. Staff names are listed for personnel who work with the collection or have overall charge of it. Entries for staffing categories represent the number of Full Time Equivalent (FTE) staff, not the number of persons.

Updating Your Library/Archive's Entry

As of 2007, we are leaving the directory open for updating on a continuous basic. Simply visit our online survey and update your listing. Please note, the survey software does not alert us when someone has submitted a new or updated entry. To ensure timely updating of your entry, please also email newcomern@ecu.edu to let the web editor know you have completed the survey

Codes & Indices

Library collection codes refer to the following:

A Self contained music library, the holdings of which include all or most music materials within the institution.
B Departmental unit comprising a core collection of music materials, with significant music holdings also located in general library stacks, storage areas, and/or other specialized units within the institution.
C General college, university, or public library collection, including music materials along with materials in other subject areas.
D Collection consisting primarily of unique, archival, rare, or other specialized research materials in the field of music.
E Collection including unique, archival, rare, or other specialized research materials in the field of music along with specialized holdings in other subject areas.
F Collection consisting primarily of recorded sound and/or other non-print materials.
G Collection consisting primarily of performance materials for use by large ensemble(s) (orchestra, band, chorus, etc.).

On site facilities codes refer to the following (note: these codes are not included in entries updated 2007 or later. For the most updated information on each site's facilities, visit that library's web site)

    L Listening Equipment
    P Photocopying
    C Computer Access by Patrons
    R Recording Duplication
    D Database Searching
    M Microform Readers
    V Video Playback Equipment

Indices: A subject index appears at the end of the directory.

2007 Directory Update

At the 2005 SEMLA meeting held in Memphis, a task force was formed to begin work on an update to the Directory of Music Collections in the Southeast. Thanks to the dedication of a number of SEMLA members, this update is now complete. Sara Beutter coordinated the efforts undertaken by the task force. Lynn Jacobson provided access to the SurveyMonkey questionnaire that allowed libraries to update their Directory entries. Nara Newcomer provided invaluable assistance by undertaking the time-consuming process of editing individual institution entries based on survey responses. Scott Phinney, Cassidy Sugimoto, Nara Newcomer, Lynn Jacobson, and Sara Beutter contacted individual libraries to request that they update their institutional entries in the Directory. The task force would also like to thank all of the people, many of them SEMLA members, who took the time to provide new information for the Directory. Thanks to your assistance, the Directory remains an important tool for researchers and music librarians.

Special Thanks - 1994

The publication of a directory such as this represents the fruition of many hours of efforts by many members of the Southeast Chapter of the Music Library Association (SEMLA). The length of these acknowledgments may seem daunting, but it reflects the scope of this project. So many people did so much. Robena Cornwell, serving as editor for the project, sent surveys to individual state coordinators, compiled the surveys as they were returned to her, and then accomplished the arduous task of transferring information from returned surveys to a database, deciphering difficult entries and making countless decisions in the process. She also valiantly responded to last hour additions, changes of approach, and unforeseen responsibilities.

Pauline Bayne developed a workflow chart at the outset and, once the basic database was compiled, became the driving force in seeing that nothing bogged down, that all possible collections were included, and that a hundred final details were resolved. One SEMLA member in each state served as that state's information coordinator, and thanks for a job well done are due Pauline Bayne, Richard Golden, Dale Hudson, Jennifer Kolmes, Leslie McCall, Mary Owings, Jill Shires, Jeannette Thompson, and Carolyn Walden. Laurie Phillips compiled the Subject Index, Robena Cornwell the Institution & Collections index, Tim Cherubini the Staff Index, and Pauline Bayne the OPAC index. Lorna Young and Pauline Bayne proofread all directory entries. Leslie Kamtman oversaw the many steps of the directory's printing and binding, and mailed the directory to collections included in the directory. She also will handle the collections and mailing for future directory sales. And finally, consistent support came from everyone in the SEMLA Chapter. The Southeast is a musically rich and diverse part of this country, and SEMLA members recognizing the importance of libraries' preserving this valuable heritage and making it more accessible generously gave their attention and energy to developing this practical resource.
