All of the Joyner Library databases can be reached from the DATABASES tab on the top toolbar off of the library's home page or directly from: http://www.ecu.edu/cs-lib/erdbs/ . When accessing the databases from off campus you will be asked for your Pirate User ID and password as you enter.
WHY CAN'T I JUST GOOGLE?
Using search engines such as Google plays an increasingly valuable role in the research process, and can alert you to material you would not otherwise come across. When you use freely-available websites, though, you have to be responsible for judging the authoritativeness and quality of what you are seeing, and you will (for the most part) only see what can be offered for free. Libraries have shared buying buying power and can make available full-text of articles that come through reputable publications that have some kind of editorial review process in place.
SEARCH TIPS
Most article databases produce better results for you if you construct the search strategy simply, using the techniques desccribed below:
Boolean Operators -- use the Boolean Operator “AND ” to narrow your search:
|
Truncation (wild cards)
This varies a bit from database to database. Most often an asterisk * is used but occasionally a question mark (?) is used. Consult the onscreen searching tips for the specific database you are using.
Ex . Case stud* allows you to retrieve “case study” as well as “case studies”
| SELECTED DATABASES - for identifying articles on your topic |
Academic Search Premier Solid coverage of a variety of topics, many articles full-text |
SPORTDiscus Full-text Covers sports, physical fitness, leisure studies, tourism, and more... |
ABI-INFORM Complete Provides in-depth coverage of business, management, industry -- includes tourism |
ProQuest Research Library Solid coverage of a variety of topics, similar to Academic Search Premier, above |
Sociological Collection All areas of sociology, including social behavior, human tendencies, interaction, relationships, community, etc. |
WHAT IF I DO NOT SEE FULL-TEXT OF THE ARTICLE ONSCREEN?
When searching in a database, sometimes the full-text is not available from within that database directly but it may be available to you through one of our many other database sources. Watch for the purple FIND IT button icon
below each of your citations in the results list. Click on that icon to follow it through to the full text of that in another database. Not everything is currently available to us full-text online, but this should help you find those that are.
The E-Journal Portal is used when you have a ‘known item' -- a citation to an article from a specific journal that you found elsewhere -- perhaps via a Google search, or listed in the reference list of some other article you are reading.
ARE BOOKS AVAILABLE ELECTRONICALLY?
The library has an increasing number of book titles available electronically. NetLibrary, for example, is a collection of books from various publishers that are available in electronic format. As an ECU student, you have access to a collection of more than 30,000 reference, scholarly and professional books. These are available by searching the library's catalog. For more information see: " How Do I....Use Netlibrary ?"
